Willis is NL Rookie of the Year

Dontrelle Willis, just 21 years old, began the 2003 season in Double-A Carolina. The D-Train's amazing journey took him all the way up to the Major Leagues, the All-Star Game and the World Series. His phenomenal run has just been capped with the National League Rookie of the Year Award.

Willis caps dream season with rookie award

Fourteen wins, an All-Star appearance, a World Series championship and now the National League Rookie of the Year. Not a bad season for 21-year-old Dontrelle Willis, the Marlins lefty who picked up the top rookie honor. After being called up from Double-A at the end of May, Willis went 5-0 with a 1.04 ERA in June, earning NL Pitcher of the Month honors.

Josh Beckett, pitching on short rest, pitched a complete-game shutout in Game 6 at Yankee Stadium to win the World Series for the Marlins. Beckett, who was named the Series MVP, struck out nine batters and scattered five hits en route to his first Series win.

Florida rookie Dontrelle Willis was 14-6 with a 3.30 ERA during the regular season while San Francisco's Jerome Williams went 7-5 and also garnered a 3.30 ERA. Neither rookie factored into the decision.

Left-hander Dontrelle Willis enhanced his Rookie of the Year chances by tossing five scoreless innings, with six strikeouts, in a 4-0 win over the Mets before 27,529 on Sunday at Pro Player Stadium. Willis (14-7, 3.30) gave up three hits and improved to 3-0 with a 0.43 ERA against the Mets.

For the second time in five days, Willis collected a no-decision against the Phillies. Last Thursday at Veterans Stadium, Willis and Millwood squared off on the day Hurricane Isabel made landfall. Neither starter was involved in the decision that day either. "It's awesome battling," Willis said of being thrust into a playoff race in a year he started off in Double-A. "It builds your character. We're in the playoff race. This is fun."

The D-Train rolls to win in St. Louis

ST. LOUIS -- If the last two starts are any indication, opponents better get to Marlins rookie Dontrelle Willis early before it gets too late. The D-Train overcame a slow start and built up steam as the game progressed in the Marlins' 7-3 win over the Cardinals on Wednesday night. The 21-year-old left-hander improved to 11-2 (2.56 ERA) and tied a Marlins record for victories by a rookie.

MIAMI -- Just one look was all it took for National League All-Star manager Dusty Baker to have a change of heart regarding Marlins rookie sensation Dontrelle Willis.
